Introduction / History

Hondurans are citizens of Honduras, in Central America. Though they speak Spanish and have a largely Spanish-based culture, much of it is also affected by the indigenous peoples of their region, including the ancient Mayans.

Honduras has many problems. Among them is a lack of health care. Poverty and unemployment are high, partly because of political corruption, and partly because of gang activity. For this reason, Hondurans are often eager to seek employment elsewhere. They live in six countries, including Honduras. Common destinations include the United States, Mexico, Spain, and Canada.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Hondurans in Mexico enjoy gathering for social events. Even teenagers spend quality time with their families. They love sports, especially soccer.

One of their favorite dances is the punta dance, which they do during celebrations. Their favorite foods include baleadas, mashed beans folded inside a flour tortilla, somewhat like the Mexican burrito.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Roman Catholicism is the most popular religion for Hondurans in Mexico, but there is also a sizable Evangelical minority among them. They can be used by God as his ambassadors to those who need the living Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

Hondurans need access to adequate healthcare and a stronger economic foundation for their families. Unfortunately, when they move outside their country for work, the family becomes weakened. That is the situation where youths are tempted to join destructive gangs.
