Introduction / History

In 1838 the British began to look for alternatives for African slaves for their Caribbean colonies. They began to hire East Indian indentured between 1861-1874. By 1884, most East Indians had moved to other Caribbean nations where there were more South Asians. These locations included Suriname, Guyana Trinidad and Tobago.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today there are more East Indians coming to Saint Kitts and Nevis from India. These are usually Sindhis who come to start businesses. Other are arriving from Guyana.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The South Asians whose ancestors were indentured servants had converted from Hinduism and Islam to Christianity. More recent South Asian arrivals are usually Hindu Sindhis.

What Are Their Needs?

The East Indians in Saint Kitts and Nevis need to have a close relationship with Jesus Christ so they can enjoy life to the full.
