The Dungi people speak Dungu. They live in Dungi town in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
Agriculture is the major occupation of the Dungu people. They raise livestock and grow maize, rice, beans, corns, guinea corn and millet. Cotton and peanuts are common cash crops.
Most Dungi people follow their African Traditional Religion. Its core concept is Animism, a religious worldview that believes natural physical entities such as animals, plants, and even inanimate objects possess a spiritual essence. In the region more generally, Islam and Christianity are the dominant religions, and some Dungi identify themselves as either Muslim or Christian. Pentecostal denominations are the fastest growing Christian denominations in the area.
Dungu is being used as a first language by a decreasing number of children. We don’t know if it is being taught in schools. It is becoming endangered as Hausa and English are more widely used in education and business. Survey work needs to be conducted to assess the multilingualism of the people and in what domains Dungu, English, Hausa and neighboring languages are being used.
Short audio Bible stories and evangelistic messages that explain salvation and give basic Christian teaching are available at globalrecording.net under the name Dingi. Each program is customized with culturally relevant selection of scripts, which may include songs and music.
Community leaders, who may be interested in further language development to preserve their language, can attend available workshops. These workshops can expose participants to language vitality and potential short-term development and translation projects.
Pray that the Dungi people will access the Bible stories that are already available online and grow in their Christian faith.
Pray that the Dungi community and church leaders will seek and receive assistance to assess their language vitality and determine their development and translation needs.
Pray that the light of the good news of Jesus and his love will shine in the hearts and homes of all Dungi people and that God’s Holy Spirit would lead them into all truth.
Pray for the material wellbeing of the Dungi people – for blessing on their crops, on their family lives and on the safety of their town.
Pray that those who follow Jesus will persevere in their faith no matter what, and that they will faithfully carry the glory of God as vessels of clay, helping the entire Dungi community to come to faith in Christ.
