Introduction / History

The Duma live in the Ogooue River region of Gabon. Their name, Duma, means “men of the river.” They have been famous for their boating skills. They go either by Duma or Aduma.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They grow many crops, especially fruits like mangos, bananas, orange, watermelon, coconut and cassava. They also make a palm wine that is attributed to hallucinations.

The Duma are also famous for their masks. They use these for funerals, general festivals and to mark the birth of twins.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They have a god of creation, but they also believe in spirits. The Duma are very fearful of sorcerers and members of secret societies.

What Are Their Needs?

The Duma people need better schools and hospitals.
