Introduction / History

Chorti is one of the many Mayan languages. It is spoken in Guatemala and Honduras.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Agribusiness has taken land from Chorti farmers. As a result, many are now hired farm laborers. Some are trying to reclaim their land.

Others are small-time merchants. They sell handmade goods, such as baskets and clothing. They are sold at open markets, in market stalls, or shops.

Speaking the Chorti language sometimes brings a stigma. Between that and the fact that Spanish is the language of trade and education, their youth are switching to Spanish.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Chortis are officially Roman Catholic, but they blend this worldwide faith with their traditional religion. There are some Evangelicals among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Chorti people have had their land taken away, so they have to survive as hired farm laborers. They need their land back. As it stands, they face food insecurity.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Chortis to find ways to earn a good living.
Pray for justice to reign in Guatemala and Honduras.
Pray for the Chortis to put all their faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray for a Christ-centered revival to overwhelm Chorti churches.
