The Evand people of Cameroon are a small ethnolinguistic group living in the Akwaya Subdivision of the South?West Region near the border with Nigeria, where the Evand community shares cultural and geographic ties with related groups across both countries. They speak the Evant language, a Tivoid language of the Southern Bantoid branch of the Niger?Congo family, which links them linguistically to peoples in the mountainous border area between Cameroon and Nigeria. Although the Evand population in Cameroon is small, their history reflects long?standing settlement in this highland region, and they form part of the broader mosaic of Cameroon's diverse peoples.
Most Evand people live in rural village settings where daily life revolves around subsistence farming, family responsibilities, and community cooperation in a region with limited infrastructure. Traditional agricultural work and communal living are central to providing for household needs, and interaction with nearby markets or towns is important for accessing goods and services not available within their villages. The mountainous environment and relative isolation of their settlements shape both the rhythms of work and social life for the Evand people, making local networks and extended family relationships essential supports.
The Evand people predominantly identify as Christian, reflecting external influences over time that have shaped religious affiliation in the region. Despite this widespread Christian self?identification, only a small percentage are part of Bible-based fellowships. As a result, many individuals' spiritual understanding incorporates a mix of Christian identification and traditional beliefs, and the depth of personal engagement with biblical Christianity varies widely.
The Evand people need greater access to Scripture and discipleship resources in the Evant language so that the gospel can be understood directly and meaningfully rather than through other tongues or secondary interpretation. They would benefit by forming communities of faith grounded in Scripture. Additionally, development support in areas such as literacy, education, and economic opportunity would help strengthen both their social well?being and capacity to engage with spiritual teaching more deeply.
Pray that God will open doors for the translation and distribution of God's word in the Evant language so that the Evand people can experience Scripture in their heart language.
Ask that God will raise up faithful workers and indigenous leaders who will disciple many to make more disciples.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will stir spiritual hunger among the Evand so that their hearts turn deeply toward Christ and that vibrant, Christ?centered church communities will grow among them.
