Introduction / History

The Evand are a small cross-border people group found in parts of southeastern Nigeria and southwestern Cameroon, particularly in forested border regions. They are part of the broader Benue ethnolinguistic cluster. Their history is rooted in long-term settlement in forested and hilly terrain, where small communities developed through kinship-based living, oral tradition, and close interaction with neighboring ethnic groups. Over time, their location across a national border has shaped patterns of movement, identity, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and Cameroon.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Evand live primarily in rural communities where daily life is centered on subsistence farming and small-scale livelihood activities. Agriculture is the main source of food and income, with families relying on seasonal rainfall and fertile forest soil to grow staple crops. Households are typically extended family units, and kinship relationships strongly influence responsibilities, inheritance, and social organization. Elders are respected as key decision-makers and custodians of tradition. Community life is closely knit and cooperative, with shared labor in farming and strong participation in cultural and social activities. Music, storytelling, and communal ceremonies connected to marriage, harvests, and village identity play an important role in cultural expression. Food is based on locally grown crops, forest produce, and seasonal availability.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Evand are predominantly Christian, with Christianity forming the main religious identity within the group. Church presence exists in varying forms and is shaped by both local expressions of faith and broader Christian traditions. Alongside this, elements of traditional religious beliefs may still be present, particularly in rural areas, where interpretations of spiritual forces, ancestral influence, and explanations of illness or misfortune continue to shape worldview. In everyday life, Christian belief and traditional understandings of spirituality may exist side by side.

What Are Their Needs?

The Evand community faces challenges associated with rural isolation and limited infrastructure. Access to healthcare, education, and broader economic opportunities is often restricted by poor transportation networks and geographic remoteness. Schools may be limited in resources and accessibility, affecting long-term educational outcomes. Healthcare services are often distant or under-resourced, increasing vulnerability to preventable conditions. Economic life remains largely subsistence-based, making households sensitive to environmental changes and limiting income stability. There is also a need for stronger community development systems that improve access to services, education, and sustainable livelihoods.

Prayer Points

Pray for revival in Evand churches, leading them to enjoy the abundant life only Jesus can offer.
Pray that Evand believers will be firmly rooted in Scripture, so their faith is not shaped by syncretism, fear, or competing spiritual worldviews within their environment.
Pray that Biblical discipleship will take deep and lasting root among Evand Christians so that faith is passed on clearly and faithfully within families and villages.
Pray that Evand believers will take up an active role in reaching neighboring ethnic groups across both Nigeria and Cameroon with the gospel.
