Both within their home region in eastern Europe and the outside world, Bosniaks are noted for their unique culture, which has been influenced by both eastern and western civilizations and schools of thought over the course of their history. Being part of Europe and influenced not only by the oriental but also by Western culture, Bosniaks are considered to be some of the most advanced Islamic peoples of the world.

Where Are they Located?

In the 1990s there were a series of complex wars involving ethnic cleansing and genocide which caused many Bosniaks to flee to safe, peaceful countries in Western Europe like the Netherlands.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bosniaks initially went to the Netherlands as war refugees, but as time went on, some returned home while others settled in the new country. Bosniaks in the Netherlands hold many different kinds of employment, though they still have a fairly high unemployment rate. Most Bosniaks have been in the Netherlands for a generation, so they are largely assimilated into Dutch society. Their children are learning Dutch ways in schools and in the workplace. They assimilate into Western cultures better than most other Muslim people groups.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Bosniaks are Sunni Muslim, although historically Sufism has also played a significant role among them. For many Bosniaks Islamic identity has more to do with cultural roots than with religious beliefs. Even among most religious Bosniaks, there is a disdain for religious leaders exercising any influence over day-to-day life. Bosniaks are no different than other Muslims in that they view Islam from the foundation that is their culture. One of the reasons why Bosniaks are accepted better than other Muslim peoples in Denmark is that they are much more likely to view religion as a private matter, much like the Danes. They don't make waves.
