Introduction / History

The Benyi people are an indigenous Bantu ethnolinguistic group of Cameroon, and they are found solely within the nation's borders. They live primarily in the Center Region's Mbam?and?Inoubou Division, especially in Mmala canton and the areas south of Bokito, where they have maintained their distinct identity through their Numala language. Although detailed published histories are limited, their presence in this part of Cameroon reflects long?standing settlement in the fertile central forest?savanna transition zone of the country.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Benyi people live in rural villages where community life revolves around subsistence farming, family relationships, and local trade. Agriculture forms the backbone of daily life, with families cultivating crops and raising animals to sustain themselves and participate in nearby markets. Like many smaller peoples in Cameroon, infrastructure such as healthcare, formal education, and reliable transportation is often limited, meaning that daily life is shaped by traditional rhythms as well as community interdependence and mutual support.

What Are Their Beliefs?

A majority of the Benyi identify with Christianity. While Christian identity is widespread, deep discipleship and biblical understanding is often missing. A significant portion of the community also continues to hold traditional indigenous beliefs, suggesting that ancestral practices and worldviews remain part of how many Benyi understand life, community, and spirituality.

What Are Their Needs?

The Benyi people speak Numala, which is almost entirely oral, so audio Scripture and storytelling-based discipleship are far more effective than print materials. They would benefit from greater access to Scripture in the Numala language, since only portions of the Bible and the New Testament are currently available, and there is no complete Bible yet in their heart language. They also need biblical discipleship and church strengthening so that those who identify as Christians can grow in faith maturity and form self?sustaining communities of faith. In addition, development support such as improved education, healthcare access, and economic opportunities would help families and individuals flourish materially as well as spiritually in this rural region.

Prayer Points

Pray that God will open doors for the completion of Bible translation in Numala, that the Benyi people might encounter God's word in the language of their heart.
Ask that the Holy Spirit will stir a deeper spiritual hunger among the Benyi so that nominal affiliation with Christianity matures into vibrant, lived faith that spreads to others.
Pray for faithful local leaders and ministries to be raised up who can nurture believers, plant churches, and model Christ?like love and service in their homes and villages.
Pray that soon the Benyis will become Christ bearers to those without the hope of Christ.
