Introduction / History

The Bate people (also known as Batta) reside primarily in northeastern Nigeria. A smaller population of Bate live across the border in Cameroon. The two groups often trade goods and services and also intermarry.

Though they speak their own language, Bata, to engage in trade, they often speak Fulfulde or Hausa.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Bate people are either fishermen or farmers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though the Bate originally resisted when Islam invaded North Africa, most of them are now Muslim. They also still practice ethnic rituals and ceremonies.

What Are Their Needs?

Bible teaching is available in the Bata's primary dialect. However, the Bible has not yet been translated into their Bata language.

Prayer Points

Pray for the gospel to be proclaimed and for their hearts to be receptive to God's offer of eternal life in Christ.
Pray for workers who will dedicate themselves to translating the Bible for the Bata.
Pray that soon there will be Bate disciples making more disciples.
