Awjila is an oasis town in the Al Wahat District in the Cyrenaica region of northeastern Libya, on the east-west caravan route between Egypt and Tripoli. This oasis is mentioned by Herodotus (c. 484 – 425 BC). They speak their own language, Awjilah.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Awijilah people cultivate small gardens using water from deep wells, and the dates they raise are well known for their high quality. Others work in the oil industry. The people are shifting from the Awjilah language to Arabic.

What Are Their Beliefs?

From the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Islam has played an important role in the Awijilah community. The Great Mosque of Atiq is the oldest masjed (mosque) in the Sahara Desert with a unique style of architecture.

What Are Their Needs?

Like all other peoples in Libya, the Awijilah community needs protection. Warfare often brings the dangerous to remote areas.
