The Muslim Kalal also go by the name Ahir. They are considered a backward caste in India. Traditionally they produced and sold alcohol such as toddy. They are divided by clan and subgroups.

Most live in Pakistan, but a small number live in the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

Perhaps because producing and selling alcohol brings contempt in both India and Pakistan, the Kalal are now farmers, producing rice and lentils. Others are small businessmen or traders.

Muslim Kalal communities make decisions and resolve conflict as a group, though their headman has a lot of say.

Most are Sunni Muslim, though there is a small Shia minority. They blend Islamic practices with their own pre-Islamic ways.

Muslim Kalal communities have faced caste-based discrimination. They are often poor. They need better access to education and health care.

Pray for loving gospel workers to catch a vision for reaching the Kalal people for Jesus and that in God's sovereign timing the hearts of these people would be open and ready to follow him.

Pray for Jesus movements to bless extended families so the gospel will spread rapidly.
